Public sector needs leadership with values
19 Jun 2012
Gerda van Dijk, Adjunct Professor and Director of the TiasNimbas Leadership Development Centre, and Morris Oosterling, associate of the Leadership Development Centre, ask in magazine Public Mission for leadership based on values in the public sector.
When accidents occur in the public sector, politicians always respond the same way: more control and supervision. To get more insight whether this is the right response, TiasNimbas and IVA Policy Research and Advice conducted research on how leaders of public organisations see public leadership themselves.
“Leadership always starts with having values. This applies to the private sector as well as the (semi-)public sector. For private public-sector organisations this means knowing which public value you need to create. Subsequently you need to stand for it and protect it. Values are extremely important in a society. This is the time to take ‘good leadership’ serious and to choose for leadership with values”, say Dr. Van Dijk en Oosterling.
